How the Irish Became White
Traces one story of the social construction of whiteness: the ways Irish immigrants to the United States gained access to the status of whites by advancing their interests at the expense of the interests of African-Americans. Individuals and political groups, who had been abolitionists while in Ireland, as well as while recent immigrants, changed their focus in order to gain political and economic status. An enlightening look at the caste of color in this country and the reader can make her or his own decision as to how applicable the Irish story is to the stories of "assimilation" by other ethnic groups.
